AI practice companion for independent language tutors

Two things happened in 2026 that did not exist together before. First, the marketplaces crossed the line from hosting tutors to competing with them: Preply's Lesson Insights, Daily Exercises and Scenario Practice, launched in August 2026 under a 'The Better Duo' campaign, and italki Plus at $5.99 a month, both sell AI practice to the learner over the top of the tutor's lessons. Second, the consumer AI tutor stopped being a demo. Langua's $308K in monthly revenue, reached in eighteen months at roughly 90% gross margin, is the number every founder in this space now quotes, and it was built with no human tutor in the loop at all. Put those together and an independent tutor is squeezed from both sides: the platform monetises the practice between their lessons, and the pure-AI apps monetise the students who decide the tutor is optional. The reaction is already visible in the tutor communities, which is exactly the moment a tool that hands the AI layer back to the tutor gets adopted. The honest risk is that the marketplaces respond by giving tutors a revenue share on their own AI features. Nothing they have shipped so far suggests they intend to.

Market gap

The AI practice layer for language learning exists three times over and none of the three belongs to the tutor. The consumer apps (Langua, TalkPal, Gliglish, Speak, and the steady stream of Show HN clones) sell a companion to the learner and position the human tutor as the expensive thing you no longer need. The marketplaces sell the same companion back to their own learners as an add-on: italki Plus at $5.99 a month, Preply's Lesson Insights and Scenario Practice under its own brand, on top of commissions of 15% to 33%. The third copy is what tutors do today by hand: WhatsApp voice notes, shared Google Docs, a ChatGPT prompt they paste for their students. What does not exist is a companion the tutor owns: trained on their lesson notes, limited to what they actually taught, branded as theirs, billed by them, and reporting back to them before each lesson. Langua's Unlimited and Standard tiers, and its enterprise plans starting at $500 a month for schools, show there is a business selling the companion to institutions; the independent tutor with ten to forty direct students is the institution nobody has priced for. Tutorloop takes that slot, and the tutor's between-lesson revenue comes with it.

Week 1-2: build the companion on commodity speech and language APIs with one hard constraint, it may only drill vocabulary and structures from the tutor's uploaded notes, and a tutor console that shows transcripts and repeated errors per student. Stripe, $29/mo, ten students. Week 3: publish the take-home calculator and the commission table as a free page aimed at 'how much do online language tutors make' and 'preply commission', which are tutor-intent searches with no product ranking. Week 4-6: student billing links so the add-on goes to the tutor, plus the weekly review email, because it is the artefact that makes the tutor feel the product is theirs. Week 7-10: recruit twenty tutors from r/Preply, r/iTalki, r/OnlineESLTeaching and the tutor Facebook groups; offer to build their first companion by hand and watch what they change. Month 3-4: Studio tier with white-label domain and multiple companions once three tutors ask for a second language or level. Month 5-6: the retention dashboard, and a case study from the first tutor whose students stayed longer.
